Figurative Language

Figurative Language is not literally true. Four common figures of speech are simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. I have been reading the Hunger Games and have found many examples of Figurative Language.

Simile: A Simile is a comparison between two unlikely things by using the words “like” or “as”.
Example in the book: “But it’s lovely, deep down under the water, like being in a different world.” Page 253. This compares the underwater as being so spectacular it is like living in another world because it is so different. The use of simile shows how amazing it is and how it is not the same, it’s comparing it to something unreal.

Metaphor: A Metaphor is similar to a Simile, yet it states something as something not just like it. It describes something as “It is” or “I am”.
In the book, Katniss is referred to as “Katniss, the Girl on Fire”. She isn’t really on fire. The metaphor shows her as being on fire to show how rebellious she is and she is the spark that is willing to set the district alight with the idea of change. The use of this metaphor shows her character as very courageous and brave, giving her this nick name.

Personification: Personification is a technique of giving a non-human thing a human quality such as hearing feelings, talking, and making decisions.
"still nights when we go to bed with our stomachs growling." Page 9. This personification is showing the stomach as growling like what a bear does when it sees its prey. The use of personification is representing them as being extremely hungry as their stomach has powers that are not human.

Hyperbole: Hyperbole is an exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe that the statement is true. Hyperboles can be used to exaggerate something so much that it is humorous.
“The laughter drains from those eyes, and they are staring so intensely into mine." Page 254. The use of hyperbole is shown when it says “so intensely”. This exaggerates the fact that they are staring; it is very intense which makes it more interesting as the hyperbole create a scarier and more interesting mood. The use of hyperbole is very effective at setting the mood to be very dark and mysterious.

Lesson Overview

This week I have learnt many new language features and terms that I didn't know previously. The term "GRAMPS" Is very helpful as it helps analyse text. This is due to G standing for genre, R for Register, A for audience, M for mode, P for purpose and S for subject. This is very helpful and I will remember this for the future as I analyse texts.

I was reminded of Lexical fields which are a group of words that share meanings. Also that Connotation is what a word symbolises such as an apple representing temptation from Adam & Eve story, and the denotation is the exact meaning of the word such as apple = small, round, fruit, red. Semantics is the meaning of the word.

My Holiday to Egypt

My Holiday to Egypt
Last year in the summer holidays I went to Egypt with my family and we stayed in a hotel called Tropitel Sahl Hasheesh, which is located in Hurghada, right on the beach. I stayed for a week and it was amazing being in 40 degree heat instead of rainy Bristol! The six hour plane journey down there with a crying baby was quite strenuous though.

As soon as I got off the plane the tropical weather was intense. It took a few hours to get used to and enjoy. When we got the hotel my family were greeted by the very friendly and welcoming hotel staff. They took our bags and showed us around the new hotel resort. The hotel was deluxe and spacious. There was and onsite pool and private beach and restaurants. This was very surreal. Once we were shown to our room I stepped out on the balcony and took this picture of the resort.

This was the image I took of the hotel resort. As you can see the pool was very spacious and the area was perfect to spend most of the day lying by the pools in a sundeck by the pool bar and relax. This is where we spent most of our time if we weren’t on the beach playing volleyball or in the hotel trying to cool down from the heat! The Egyptian people are very nice but can sometimes be over friendly to women but this didn’t put me off the holiday as it was a very secure area.

One day my Mum decided to book a domestic flight which was from Hurghada to Cairo, in purpose of seeing the Pyramids as they are one of the great wonders of the world! The flight there was very quiet and we were given a Twinkie bar which was a bonus! When we got there the city was a lot more run down and dirty, in contrast to the pristine condition of Hurghada. After the coach to the Pyramids I got off and seen many camels! The people offered an experience to ride camels but I was petrified that I may fall off and also the camels were dribbling which was off-putting. The Egyptian men were very pushy and tried to sell jewellery and camel ride to tourists. The Egyptian men joked about trying to buy me for “a million camels”. My family found it very funny but I was anxious as I was not used to this attention and didn’t think they were joking. My mum thought she was being funny by jokingly saying “You can have her for free” I didn’t find it so entertaining, but laughed it off anyway.

The Pyramids overall were very interesting and here is a picture of me stood by one. I look tiny compared to the massive Pyramid!

As you can see I look very tanned and dark! This was a bonus of going to somewhere hot like Egypt I caught an amazing tan. Overall it was an incredible holiday full of relaxing and also day tripping the Pyramids. I would go back there again but this time just go for pure relaxation and no day trips as I am quite lazy and prefer to lie down and tan.

Twerking isn't working

Miley Cyrus - Twerking at VMA Perfomance

http://www.theweek.co.uk/entertainment/54821/miley-cyrus-violates-us-shocking-display-twerking-robin-thicke-video-vma-awards

This article displays Miley Cyrus's outrageous VMA performance including her "twerking" which is a very provocative dance. Miley Cyrus was a former Hannah Montana star, where she played a teenage character on a Disney channel. She is a role model for children and she should not be showing a degrading dance routine which is very inappropriate for the awards. She could of sang her new song "Wrecking Ball" for attention; but instead, she decided to feature in Robin Thickle's performance by dancing on him, wearing very little clothes.

Several celebrities’ reactions were very negative in the crowd such as Will Smith's family, Rihanna, One Direction and Taylor Swift. They had horrifying looks on their faces from this unexpected performance. I feel sorry for her family that they had to witness this performance in the audience and since Robin Thickle is twice her age it is quite disturbing.

Miley Cyrus created mass attention in the public eye, therefore this made everyone know of her performance. This is sad because she is not getting the right attention, for example for having a great voice, but instead she is getting attention for having such a desperate performance.
